The benefits of staying in Vacation Rentals: an affordable, convenient and fun option for families!

If you are a parent you know traveling with small children can be challenging, to say the least. There is chaos, fussy kids; and nothing seems further from enjoyment and relaxation than taking them anywhere.

Living in the Riviera Maya, we always have enthusiastic friends and family members encouraging us to join them in their dream vacation and of course, take our kids because they are dying to see them.

For us it seems crazy to do so… we are paying top price to stay in a fancy all-inclusive hotel and just hear about the amazing specialty restaurants we can’t go to because our children go to bed early, or the amazing spa that we can’t go to because we have no one to keep an eye on our children, and so on… for us there is a parade of fun activities we can’t do.

After a few of these experiences, we got wiser and found a way to accommodate everyone’s needs: vacation rentals.

Benefits of Staying in Vacation Rentals: Affordable

Vacation rentals are an affordable option for parents everywhere, we have been renting them on websites or through friends and family members and it’s like magic; everyone seem to be happier and more relaxed.

One of the benefits of vacation rentals is that you cut the cost of a holiday dramatically. Recently we stayed a few days in Akumal Mexico, a block away from the beach in a beautiful 2bed/2bath condominium with a pool and a huge terrace. The cost was around 146 USD for two nights; compared to the 520 USD for the smallest/cheapest hotel room located only a block away.

We decided to take the kid’s nanny and had a wonderful time, spent about 100 USD on groceries and only had a few meals out. If you consider that we spend between 20-80 USD every time we go out to a restaurant, you can see how that adds up to a lot of money very quickly.

Benefits of Staying in Vacation Rentals: Convenient

A vacation rental gives you the opportunity to rent someone’s home or condo in residential areas of Tulum, Mexico. (Read related: 3 things to do in Tulum, off the beaten path). Most of these places have one or more bedrooms, a living/dining and a kitchen. For our family, the kitchen makes a huge difference, letting you cook your children’s favorites and save a lot of money.

Most places also have a laundry room, so you can do some washing at home and reduce your baggage and the cost of sending your clothes to the laundry.

For us having the extra bedroom also means we can take a trusty friend/relative or nanny to help with the kids. A win-win that lets them take a few days off the routine and gives the parents some free hours to go out for a nice dinner, a dip in the sea or whatever you fancy.

Benefits of Staying in Vacation Rentals: Fun

I am not sure why, but my children love staying at vacation rentals, compared to a hotel. Maybe is the biggest space, the change of air or the fun of exploring the new home but they are also happier.

Some of the places we have rented have had a huge TV in the kid’s room, video games and even a toy chest and water toys: heaven. I also believe that the homey feeling and sticking to their routine makes the transition easier for them to handle.

Most of these places are going to have amenities like a pool, golf course or playground, again something fun for the whole family. We took our children to the pool and the beach and they had a great time, there weren’t fancy restaurants or spas; but we were happy and relaxed and even sneaked out for a nice dinner on our own.

Benefits of Staying in Vacation Rentals: Flexible

When staying in hotels, the check-out time is not very flexible, or there is an extra fee for stay a few extra hours. In a vacation rental there is a lot more flexibility, we have explained that we need a few more hours to get the kids together and the host graciously granted us some extra time.

Vacation rentals have also allowed us to create a relationship with some of the homeowners, which has let us to get special discounts, preferential rates and flexibility with check-in and check-out times. Also, our kids know the vacation rentals and they feel right at home, making the transition much easier for everyone. We go to some of these places so often that my children get super excited as soon as we enter the subdivision or the apartment complex.

Vacation rentals are a great option for families as they are allow you to have an affordable, convenient and fun holiday that accommodate everyone’s needs.

With vacation rentals becoming a very popular option, especially in high tourist areas, vacation real estate rental provide a great investment. Not only does it give you and your family a dream vacation home for years to come, by it also provides a hassle free investment when you let others assist you in renting it out.
